Christmas morning caroling at a convalescent home in La Mesa. Hopefully, the beginning of a new tradition with members of Christ URC. It was a terrific way to begin the day..

The sad truth is that some elderly people put into a convalescent home are, to a certain extent, abandoned. Several of the people I spoke with were not expecting anyone from their family to visit them on Christmas Day. This is a hard thing, since God has made human beings as social creatures, those who are dependent upon relationships with other human beings. Contrary to the lie of the spirit of this age, we do not find ourselves in ourselves, but in each other.

It is amazing how the smallest acts of mercy from a fellow image-bearer can be so cherished.

Thank you to Jonathan and Hillary Taylor for organizing this event. I hope that we can do this again in 2008, as well as find other ways, as a congregation and individuals, to bring the gospel and mercy to those who are old, sick, shut-in, and, in some cases, abandoned.
