Covenant Theology Class at CURC tonight: The Mosaic Covenant: a covenant of works or grace?
Come and find out. Learn also why knowing the difference is so important for the Christian life. Class is at 7.00pm.
Reformation Conference in Sunny San Diego, CA
If you will be anywhere near San Diego during Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, why not attend a FREE Reformation conference on "John Calvin: Still Relevant at 500." Dr. Michael Horton is the keynote speaker and my buddy and prayer partner Rev. Brian Tallman (pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church) and myself will speak during breakout sessions (I will speak on Calvin's theology of worship).
The conference is on Friday night and Saturday morning (finished in plenty of time for Oct 31st festivities in the evening). This should be a great conference, as well as a nice opportunity for the congregations of Christ URC in Santee and New Life PCA in La Mesa to fellowship with each other. If you know anyone in the San Diego area who would benefit from being at this conference, please bring them along.
For more information, contact New Life Presbyterian Church.
Reformation Conference in Sunnyside, WA
If you will be anywhere near Sunnyside, WA on Friday, November 6, consider attending a free Reformation conference hosted jointly by a Reformed church and two Lutheran churches. My friend and fellow URC church-planter, Rev. Shane Lems will be one of the speakers.
Some opponents to confessional Protestantism try to make much about the differences in Protestant denominations, as if it helped make their case against sola Scriptura. But a conference such as this shows that confessional Reformed and Lutheran churches are united in the first and most important mark of a true church: the pure preaching of the gospel. It is the gospel that creates, shapes , and unites Christ's church.
How do I discover my calling?
As a pastor, I am often asked about how one goes about discovering one’s calling in life. How do I know what God wants me to do for a vocation? The point of this blogpost is to lay down some general principles about how to know your calling in life.
Let me say first that I am not speaking about God’s general revealed will for our lives expressed in his commandments. Nor am I speaking of the way Scripture speaks of the general calling of every Christian. The NT is very clear that we called to be holy/saints (Rom 1.6-7; 1 Cor 1.2), suffer (1 Pet 2.20-21), blessing those who persecute us (1 Pet 3.9), etc. Rather, I am referring to what is not revealed in Scripture. How do I know what God wants me to do for a job? After all, it’s not like there is a verse in the Bible that says, “Mike Brown, God wants you to be a Reformed pastor.”
I want to deal this subject by asking three questions: What is work? Why do I need particular calling? And, how do I discover my calling?
