Homework for Week 7, to be turned in on Oct 19

(HC = Heidelberg Catechism)

I. Memorize HC QQ.1, 2, 3-5, 21

II. Read HC Lord's Day 37 and answer the following questions:

A. What is the difference between swearing an oath and taking the Lord's name in vain? Is it ever permissible to take an oath?

B. Read Matt 26.63-64 and Acts 18.18. Did Jesus and Paul allow themselves to be placed under oaths? Did they break the third commandment? Why or why not?

C. Read Matt 5.33-37. What did Jesus mean in this passage?

D. Read 2 Corinthians 1.23. Why would Paul say, "I call God to witness against me." What did he mean by this?

E. How can you bring glory to the Lord by your everyday speech?

I. Memorize HC QQ.1, 2, 3-5, 21

II. Read HC Lord’s Day 36 and answer the following questions:

A. Give some concrete examples of how a person can abuse or profane the name of God.

B. Read Leviticus 24.10-16. What does this text teach us about blaspheming the name of God?

C. Read James 5.12. What is James’ point? How can you apply this to your daily living? (Be specific)

D. Read Ephesians 5.25, 29. What is Paul’s point? How can you apply this to your daily living? (Be specific)

E. What can you do in your own life to bring glory to the name of the Lord?

Homework for Week 5, to be turned in on Oct 5

(HC = Heidelberg Catechism)

I. Memorize HC QQ.1, 2, 3-5

II. Read HC Lord’s Day 35 and answer the following questions:

A. According to Q.96, what is the governing rule for worship?

B. Read Hebrews 12.18-29. How should we worship the Lord? What is acceptable worship?

C. According to the Second Commandment, is it permissible to make pictures of God? Why or why not, and why should you care?

D. Is it permissible to make pictures of Jesus? Why or why not, and why should you care?

E. Is it permissible to make pictures of human beings who lived in history? Why or why not, and why should you care?

F. Read Colossians 3.4; Titus 2.13; 1 John 3.2; Rev 22.1-4. What do these passages teach us about seeing Jesus? How does this effect our lives now?

II. Read HC Lord’s Day 34 and answer the following questions:

A. Why are the Ten Commandments important for us as Christians?

B. Read Ephesians 6.1-4. Which commandment does the Apostle Paul quote?

C. In what ways can we be guilty of the sin of idolatry? (Be specific)

D. Read Ephesians 5.3-21. What does this hav to do with your life as a Christian?

E. Read Ephesians 5.5. Explain how covetousness is idolatry.

Homework for Week 3, Sep 21

(HC = Heidelberg Catechism)

I. Memorize HC QQ.1 and 2

II. Read HC Lord’s Day 33 and answer the following questions:

A. Describe what it means to have heartfelt sorrow for our sins.

B. Read Ephesians 4.17-22. What is the “former manner of life…corrupt through deceitful desires” of which Paul speaks? How can we put this off?

C. Read Ephesians 4.23-24. What does it mean to be renewed in the spirit of our minds? What is the new self and how do we put it on?

D. Read Colossians 3.1-17. Do you desire to live this way? Why?

E. How do we know what those good works are in which God delights? Where must we look to learn how to live as Christians?
