TIME magazine article on the New Calvinism

Get it here.

My thoughts: when this fad burns away like the rest of them, Reformed churches will still be around just like they always have since the Reformation. Hopefully what TIME is calling the "new Clavinism" (a la quasi-Reformed and Baptist celebs such as Piper and Driscoll) can be a halfway house for bruised and battered people going from evangelicalism to Reformed Christianity. Just don't stay in the halfway house forever.

Washington Post interviews Horton

Read Horton's response to questions/statements such as this:

What is this? You are coming from a primitive, un-evolved consciousness. This is called ethno-centrism. Spirituality is about personal transformation and this is symbolized by the mythological death and resurrection of Jesus. There is no historical independent attestation for a literal, historical Jesus. Do your homework with an objective mind. The only attestation is the bible, which is full of holes, superstition, and contradiction. The truth is that religion and spirituality are about evolution and transformation. Religion is evolving like everything else, albeit much more slowly due to people who cling to literalist interpretations of ancient myth and "theology." The very theology of a savior who had to die to save us from "God's wrath" is a shame based teaching that implied that God did not get it right the first time when he created our Souls in His image. It's nonsense and this is why Christianity is a dying religion.

There is an interesting article in TIME regarding the prosperity-gospel's misreading of Providence and the subprime mortgage mess.

Reformed Churches in Myanmar need help

burma.jpgThe following letter was received by all URCNA churches:
To all Councils of the URCNA;

I received word from the son of Rev.Dr.Moses Ngunhlei Thang of the United Reformed Churches in Myanmar that several churches had been destroyed and that they requested our prayers and assistance. After discussing the request with the Committee for Ecumenical Contact with Churches Abroad, we have agreed that sending aid through Word and Deed would be more prudent at this time. I have included a press-release from Word and Deed for your information.

WORD & DEED – MYANMAR/BURMA - With an estimated 32,000 people dead and fears that the number could rise to 100,000 with a further 1.5 million at risk, the world's eyes are fixed on the repressive government of Burma (Myanmar).  While UN emergency relief was recently given permission to land, the supplies were seized by authorities there.  The United States has been able to bring in one plane load and has permission to bring two more.  Only a small fraction of the aid that is needed is getting through.

Sad and Pathetic

Kissing-Pope's-Ring.jpgThe Pope and the Christian Reformed Church. Read about it here. (HT Shane Lems and Kim Riddlebarger)

No, those are not representatives from the CRC kissing the pope's ring in the picture to the left, but hopefully the picture makes the point. The question is this: Does the CRC believe the Three Forms of Unity or not? If so, will someone please give a copy to Rev. Dykstra? Apparently, he has forgotten what it says with regard to justification sola fide and the marks of a true church. Our unity as Christians is in the truth we confess. Attending the Pope's ecumenical prayer service led by Pope Benedict XVI does NOT "demonstrate that unity." And what exactly is this nebulous thing called the "Reformed world and life view"? How about a Reformed confession? You know, that thing to which Reformed ministers subscribe and promised before witnesses to uphold and defend.

I realize that there are still some faithful ministers in the CRC, but as far as I am concerned, the sooner the denomination drops the title "Reformed" from their name, the better it will be for everyone.
