Herman Bavinck was a late 19th century-early 20th century Dutch theologian. He succeeded Abraham Kuyper at the Free University of Amsterdam in 1902. His work is currently being translated into English and should prove to be a tremendous benefit for the church. Consider Bavinck an extended version of Berkhof. If you want to go deep in your theological studies, Bavinck is hard to beat.

This book completely shifted my paradigm for understanding the four Gospels. Before I read it, I used to think of the Gospels as sort of the "biography of Jesus" with the Easter story at the end. Ridderbos shows how and why the Gospels are far more significant than that; they are about the breaking in of the kingdom and the inauguration of the age to come. Highly recommended!

This is the ONLY book by N.T. Wright that I recommend. You can read my review of it at The Books and the Parchments.
